Mikvaot Department

Welcome!
What is Mikveh ? And what is the level of cleanliness and hygiene?

Mikveh of purity has always been an integral part of a Jew's life. Even if, God forbid, he weakened in the observance of the Torah and the commandments, even if he left the legacy, always in all periods – this commandment of purity was not neglected!

In our city of Ashdod, B"H there are mikvahs in almost all areas of the city, new mikvahs with a level of cleanliness and constant high hygiene alongside sanitary ware and locker rooms and makeup rooms conveniently for each and every one.

In the past two years, four more magnificent mikvahs have been built in our city: in the City, in the 6th district, in the 9th district and in the 12th district.

What is "Mikveh Tahara"?

Mikveh is a place where natural water is collected, which has not been detached from the ground, and which contains at least 40 sah = about 750 liters.

The mikvehs that are found today

A typical mikveh today looks like this: a small pool of water covered with porcelain tiles, comfortable stairs lead to its bottom, and it is wide enough that they can withstand it with the utmost comfort. The water in this "pool" is changed frequently and heated to a comfortable temperature. However, the fundamental difference between a swimming pool and this pool lies in a large tank of water, hidden from view, and adjacent to the mikveh of purity. This tank [called a "cistern" or "treasure"] contains natural rainwater, which connects to the pool water through a puncture that can be seen in the mikveh, below the water line. Through it, the natural treasure water is "irrigated" with the pool water, in its connection it becomes a single entity, and the "pool" becomes a "mikveh purity".

Mikveh visit:

The woman when she comes to the mikveh enters a handsome "lobby", from which the bathrooms are entered. The bathroom is a cozy private room, well equipped, in which you can leisurely do all the preparations for a dip. When the woman is ready, she presses the bell button installed in the bathroom. The balnea arrives, and leads her through a side door to the mikveh itself, where, of course, no other woman is present. The woman is immersed, and it is the job of the balnea to make sure that her baptism is done properly, with her whole body and hair in the water. After the baptism, the woman returns to her room to get organized. In many mikvehs there is another room, which contains hair dryers, makeup and the like.

Annotation of the matter of purification:

All matters of "impurity" and "purity" are purely spiritual matters, and we certainly do not have the tools to understand them. If we do not understand what impurity is, we certainly cannot understand how it is removed. And these are the words of Maimonides, the great thinker and physician, in his book "The Strong Hand" at the end of the halachot of mikvahs and baptism:

"It is clear and visible, that the impurities and purifications of the decrees of the Scriptures are, and are not of the things that a man's mind achieves... And the baptism from the impurities – of all the laws [commandments whose taste is unknown to us] is, for the impurity is not clay or dirt that will pass through the water, but the decree of the Scriptures is."

The Torah states that the impurity of the niddah is a spiritual state that can only be eliminated by immersion in the Mikveh Tahara. This is a law, this is how it works, even though we do not understand it!

Cleanliness and hygiene at a high level in mikvehs:

The mikveh is not only a clean and sanitary place, but for the most part, the mikvehs that are currently located are built to a high standard and quality, which does not embarrass any hotels. About the level of cleanliness and hygiene in the ritual baths we can see according to the following facts:

  1. Mikvehs of purity are constantly supervised by the Ministry of Health.
  2. The water in the mikveh contains "bromine", which is an excellent disinfectant.
  3. The water in mikvehs is replaced frequently [according to the number of mikvehs, so there are many mikvahs that change the water every day].
  4. Before the woman enters the mikveh, she is obliged by Halacha to thoroughly wash her entire body with hot water and soap, to wash the hairs on her head and to comb them strictly, and to make sure that there is no hair or dirt on her body. [In which swimming pool, sanitary as it may be, there are such cleaning procedures???]
  5. The time the woman stays in the mikveh water is very short [on the other hand, in a swimming pool you stay for a long time, and in the meantime the body secretes secretions of sweat, etc...]
  6. The minimum amount needed for a kosher mikveh is 40 sah [about 750 liters], and with such a quantity of water, any poisonous substance will be eliminated (Dr. Jacob Smitlein, a member of the New York Medical Association). (From the 'Grace and Honor' website)
